"Nail jointing" of wooden furniture jointing method

Wooden furniture is usually composed of several parts assembled according to the requirements of the design drawings through a certain joint method. The connection between the components is called "jointing" and has a technical name called "joint". There are several ways to join wooden furniture products, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of joining method is an important part of the structural design of furniture. Whether the joining method is appropriate or not has a direct impact on the appearance quality, strength and processing of furniture. The commonly used joining methods of wood furniture include tenon jointing, glue jointing, nail jointing, wood screw jointing, connector jointing and so on.

Nail joint is a kind of connection method that is easy to use and operate, but its joint strength is low, and it is generally used to connect non-load-bearing structures or load-bearing structures with little force, and often glue is added to the joint surface to improve the joint strength. Nail jointing is widely used in the traditional hand-produced wooden furniture in China, the nail here does not simply refer to the iron nail, its material usually has metal, bamboo, wooden 3 kinds, of which the metal nail application is the most common, metal nail commonly used is divided into two kinds of round nails and air nails.

The round nail joint is relatively simple, and it is often used in occasions where the strength requirements are not too high and do not affect the appearance, and the joint part is more secret. For example, it is used in places where the backboard, drawer installation slide, guide wood strip and other places are not exposed and the strength requirements are low. Round nails are relatively rare in high-end furniture, when using nail jointing, its nail grip force is very important, the nature and state of wood materials, nail shape, etc. can affect the nail grip force of wood materials.

Here are the general factors that affect nail grip strength:

1. Nailing direction

In actual production, nails should be nailed along the direction of the horizontal grain of the wood as much as possible to make full use of the nail holding performance of the wood, due to the different properties of various materials, the nail holding force is also different. For wood-based panels, nails perpendicular to their surface planes have a good nail holding force.

2. Material density

The size of the wood density has a certain impact on the nail holding force, and the nails of the wood with high density are difficult to nail in, but the nail holding force is also large, although the nail holding force of the wood with small density is small, but the wood with loose material is not easy to split, and the nail diameter, length and number of nails can be increased to make up for the lack of nail holding force.

3. Nail structure and size

The contact area between the nail and the wood of different structures is different, resulting in the friction between the nail and the wood is also different, and the wood fiber of each part is in different shear and tensile states when the nail is pulled, so that the nail holding force is different. There are many types of nail structures, including ordinary round squares, longitudinal grooves, annular grooves, spiral grooves and barbed grooves.
